Get Refreshed: Going Past The Spine, and The Importance of Having Fun

“Get Refreshed” is a weekly column by Billy Bugara covering all things digital in the music world. Refresh yourself here.  Cover by Nick D’Apolito and most importantly, quinn is having fun If you think you have any sort of read on quinn’s artistic status, that’s a flat-out lie; the thing is, no one really knows quinn in this sense. Why? Because she genuinely operates on a different plane of existence than the rest of the music world. Each and every new offering is a top-to-bottom cleansing of all assumptions placed on her based on what fans heard last, and because she’s, well… quinn, of course she tops herself with each of these successive releases, no matter the style, no matter the genre, and no matter the approach she takes in confronting whatever it is.  So don’t say you really know quinn as an artist, I certainly don’t. What I do know, however, is that she’s pretty damn good at following her advice. Because her latest single and accompanying video entitled “and most importantly, have fun” is easily her most pleasant and amusing track in a good while, and it absolutely kills as a result of this. Though retaining the crazed, …

Get Refreshed: The Unreal World of zootzie, The Real World of glaive, and raegun Responds With Ease

“Get Refreshed” is a weekly column by Billy Bugara covering all things digital in the music world. Refresh yourself here.  Cover by Nick D’Apolito Preface: In Memory of Lucas Foster This column is not the place for mourning, but it certainly is the place for memorializing. So much has been said about the impact of Lucas Foster – a beyond-exceptional writer who suddenly passed away this weekend – by so many others far closer to him; as a longtime admirer of his work, craft, and overall presence in the grander music blogging space, however, I feel as though I have a necessity to extend my greatest gratitude for what he was able to do during his short, yet remarkably resounding life as an equal-parts human being and master of their craft.  Be it subconsciously or direct as can be, reading the work of Lucas whenever I could inspired many of the undertakings I went through in my much more active blogging days. He was the ever-true root that others, and even he himself, grew out of as this online blogging landscape blossomed more and more over time. By extension of this notion, it would be difficult to dispute that anyone …

VVBLUE – [SEBii]

While the world of hyperpop is taking over the entire musical landscape as we know and love it, I couldn’t be more excited for the future. These artists are some of the most unique and inventive musicians that the world has ever seen, and what’s even more incredible is the fact that most of these talents are under the legal drinking age. As for SEBii, I feel like he’s way too versatile to be simply boxed into the hyperpop or glitchcore genres, so I’d say that he’s in a lane of his own that other artists haven’t even come close to touching quite yet. Although I’ve only become familiar with this wild world of music within the past few months, I have become engrossed with all of the out-of-the-box thinking individuals who make up the sonic landscape, and SEBii is at the very top of my list of favorites. While I’m used to hearing his more lighthearted, upbeat ballads that are joyous and playful, it almost seems like he steps out of his comfort zone on his latest tape VVBLUE, a 7 song, 18-minute-long effort that shows a different side of SEBii on some songs while giving us a taste …

hate me – [midwxst]

As I find myself falling deeper and deeper down the wormhole that is Hyperpop, I find myself getting more and more interested in weirder sounds. While I say weird, I should clarify that I’ve been partial to interesting, innovative, and creative sounds that might come off as weird to the average listener, yet it might be normal to anyone else who has familiarized themselves with the Hyperpop scene. While midwxst has been stating his claim as to why he’s legitimately one of the best up and coming artists in the genre, he never seems to slow down and that’s part of the reason why I’ve become enthralled in the sonic landscape he has painted for himself and admirers all over the world. As I familiarize myself more and more with the subgenre as well, it appears as if there is a group of artists that stick together and collaborate more than any other genre, so this is something I admire more than anything else. Most recently, midwxst teamed up with fellow Helix Tears member/founder blackwinterwells for a track entitled “hate me”. wells handled the production on this hit, bringing a dexterous, lively beat to life with some strange yet playful …

Get Refreshed | Fishmonger Season, The Aj-Umru Connection, and EPs For Everyone

“Get Refreshed” is a weekly column by Billy Bugara covering all things digital in the music world. Refresh yourself here.  Cover by Bernard Vernon fishmonger, Or, How To Be Today’s Perfect Album For Yesterday What do you call an album that sets out to do everything, and then does more than everything? I think I’d refer to an album like this as “one in a million,” but fishmonger also works just as well. We were promised quite an impactful project given the anticipation that came from underscores’ long-awaited solo return, yet none of us could have predicted the sheer ambition, flawless sonic balance, and masterfully-constructed songwriting that this album ended up exhibiting — all under the mantle of numerous sounds, styles, and overall creative dynamism within this 34-minute journey.  This is the first album to fully, and I mean fully, encompass what the decade of the 2000s means to those who grew up in it; it goes above and beyond what even the likes of 100 Gecs have been able to do inside that same arena. Everything is here, and it’s here en masse: the brightest points of pop’s teen-centric era, the emotionally-profound soundscapes of alt-rock and emo that laid …

darkkmagician – [blackwinterwells]

No one has convincingly dominated the modern music soundscape as fully and efficiently as blackwinterwells over the past year-plus. So much of the dream-esque, atmospheric, and utterly resounding sonic elements that pop music is beginning to take on more and more each day has been mastered by this magnificent talent, and it has been that way for quite some time. Where the Ontario, Canada standout has yet to fully delve into, however, is translating these ever-effective musical settings into a visual medium. It’s an endeavor that could be circumvented via the pure imagination her music sparks on its own, but one that certainly has all the potential in the world to be explored right in front of our eyes.  This task has finally been taken up via the newly-released video for her seminal single “darkkmagician.” Premiering via the titular Helix Tears channel and shot by fellow pop phenom 8485, this video serves as yet another example of the limitless creativity found within this generational act. It is a fact we can observe – and have done so accordingly – with nearly every track she’s contributed to, but with a visual element now in our hands, it becomes that much clearer …

Tracing Paths – [blackwinterwells] x [8485]

The most ideal future for pop music lies in the hands of blackwinterwells and 8485. These two artistic sensations are tried and true examples of how music has progressed up to this point in time — a time now where the quality of one’s art is judged and admired for its sincerest qualities, rather than how well it fits into the “popular lexicon” at a given moment.  Whether it is through brutal, emotional honesty, celestial sonic atmospheres, or just how downright learned and experienced the music sounds, these two have exemplified all that it means to make standout art in this day and age. The Helix Tears duo is a match made in heaven as well, simply defying the idea of chemistry and crafting collaborative offering after collaborative offering as though they were meant to make each and every song they ever did as a pair.  So it comes as no surprise whatsoever that these two would make a project together that not only stands out for its seamless pairing of these two alone, but also in marking a statement that elevates their respective statuses as future pop icons all the same. That project has indeed come in the form …

Kite: A Platinum End For Bright Beginnings

Each and every artist that makes up the current-day online music landscape is defined by nothing more than their own sense of individuality. These acts stand out so vividly amongst each other due to how they embrace their individual nature by themselves through their music and image alike, but what makes this scene so fascinating is how they do so collectively in such large numbers at the same time ever-so-constantly.  That is where an artist like 18-year-old phenom Kite comes into play. The Atlanta, Georgia native is essentially one of the most ideal reflections of what these ideas represent towards this entire scene as a whole. This magnificent talent has made an already-experienced career flourish on years end with their one-of-a-kind vocal inflection, superb pop prowess, and an all-around spotless approach to their craft that has made them one of the most defining long-lasting figures out of this burgeoning scene.  Being a member of Goonncity, Helix Tears, and Graveem1nd simultaneously, they have brought with them a dynamic outlook to their artistic presence that seems to find its place in a variety of collectives and other collaborations alike. Though their sound is absolutely untapped, they still find ways to spread it …

STRENGTH BONUS – [Blackwinterwells] x [osquinn] x [Fish Narc]

It is always such a refreshing and hopeful event when the next wave of modern music truly begins to set in more than it already has. This rare changing-of-the-guard experience, while gradual, is always a sight to see as it goes on, and the music that comes out of it is of course going to be outstanding in itself.  This type of event becomes especially clear when established producers and artists alike become more and more accustomed to what this new wave brings — a fact that has just been demonstrated by one of the most defining producers of the tail end of the 2010s in Fish Narc. His first collaboration with what is now being considered the next generation of pop moving forward is fittingly with two of the scene’s most iconic and staple acts in Blackwinterwells and osquinn, and the resulting product is nothing short of incredible.  These three linked up for the first time to create “STRENGTH BONUS,” a track that sees their individual talents all combining to create one of the absolute best singles to be heard thus far this year. Even beyond such a definitive statement such as that, this track represents a true statement …

seventh heaven – [senses]

Today’s world is one that sees a heightened level of self-awareness and transparency when it comes to having a public image. In knowing this, it makes it all the more special when a figure – especially one in an online space – can embrace the art of conceptual anonymity to its fullest potential and carry their lives out as such within this very space.  The few musicians who do this so well in today’s age are seeing their careers supplemented by simply standing out amongst the rest of their contemporaries, and given music as a stand-alone medium, this conceptual outlook just begs for these artists to tailor a full-length experience around it. Their already-immense sense of creativity is simply bolstered if given the right amount of time and care to an album in this manner. An artist who has done the absolute most with this concept within the burgeoning online music scene over the past year-plus has been senses — a self-proclaimed musical robot of sorts who has been making some of the most outstanding electronic-tinged pop music to come out of this rising scene as a whole. But one thing they lacked to fully correlate with their unique conceptual …
