Get Refreshed: ericdoa’s Guide To The Music Industry, Inside “Insignia’s Manor,” and Resonating With DV-i

“Get Refreshed” is a weekly column by Billy Bugara covering all things digital in the music world. Refresh yourself here.  Cover by Nick D’Apolito DV-i: “Resonance” With drum and bass still on its gradual journey of increased relevance throughout 2021, the genre has been recently jam-packed with artists both new and old to the approach coming through with some exceptional offerings at a blistering pace. But even though it can be difficult to peer through the mass amount of new content coming out of this style each and every day, it is quite easy to still see the work of a tried and true purveyor of the genre like DV-i shining as bright as it always, always does.  And if for some reason you’ve had trouble identifying such a bright and magnificent star like she is based on her latest output this year, her latest single “Resonance” is practically unable to be ignored once listened to for the first time. I’ll just put it straight; this is without question the best single offering out of the d&b-sphere to release this year, and it even rivals some of DV-i’s most exceptional work beyond just the past few months as well. It’s …

Get Refreshed: Twikipedia and SEBii’s Trip To Eagleland, A Year Since Exeter, and Saturn’s Guide to SoundCloud

“Get Refreshed” is a weekly column by Billy Bugara covering all things digital in the music world. Refresh yourself here.  Cover by Brixton Yorker Twikipedia + SEBii: “hotel” Occasions like these remind me that nothing ever truly grows “stale” in music, no matter what the hardcore skeptics and critics of the world may think otherwise. Both the art and the craft of basing entire hip-hop tracks around video games – while always being present and developing – have taken on prominent and exciting new forms over the past decade. MCs and producers alike from scenes that stretch from South Florida to the Kanto Region ushered in this wholly entertaining era as the 2010s entered its waning years, and though this particular approach had its moment for quite some time, it certainly isn’t at the level of supply that it once was.  Now if anyone from today’s crop of superstars-in-the-making were to give this approach a welcomed return-to-form, could we have chosen a more obvious pairing than Twikipedia and SEBii? I seriously believe there could have been no one better to take up this task than these two given their track record of video game-centric bars and aesthetics alike; the shared …

Ahead of New Album “SCISSORHANDS,” Kid Trash Speaks On Their Already-Influential Career

Time and time again are the earliest innovators within prominent music scenes left by the wayside once said scene effectively takes off. For as much creative effort as these select acts put forth in their early work, rising figures who take further inspiration – either directly or indirectly from them – usually end up at the forefront of their scene if this traditional cycle continues.  Numerous past examples could be brought up, but there is no point in getting into any of them. Put simply, Kid Trash has been representing the sounds, styles, and overall culture of the burgeoning digicore scene for years on end now — far longer than many of the community’s standout acts. In saying this, they don’t want to fall under these aforementioned descriptions.  And it’s safe to say they never will. Kid Trash is the musical alias of a 20-year-old named Sophia from Nottingham, UK. Their name has been longer associated with the facets that make up modern online music today than practically any of their contemporaries — all due to how ahead of the curve they have proven to be throughout their artistic uprising in this light. Lead Never Follow – [Uknoxoxo]

The act of creating a purely entertaining setting with one’s music is certainly not lost amongst the modern online music scene. In fact, this is an era that is essentially serving as our most creatively bursting and definitively entertaining period in the history of music as a whole, mostly due to the limitless free-range that contemporary acts have been gifted via the power of streaming platforms and social media alike. This type of approach has made for some of the most captivating, gripping, and purely entrancing acts to arise out of this era in years past. Canada’s Uknoxoxo is just one artist out of a seemingly endless cast of talents that embody this notion, but there are seldom acts who can truly match their enticing presence on the mic. Their latest track “Lead Never Follow” is an ideal example of what makes someone like them as of-their-own as they are. Spanning just under 2 minutes in length, this track is filled to the brim with some of the most charming and compelling passages to fill up such a short amount of time, in the end making for an all-around outstanding listen in full. Though frequent collaborator Sg Lily’s glistening and …

It’s Complicated – [Boysnightsout]

The gradual rise of atmospheric, luscious, and ethereal aspects seeping their way into the grander hip-hop landscape has been something of a noted trend throughout the past few years in the genre’s history. With these aspects beginning to play a larger and larger role in the public’s awareness and/or enjoyment of the genre, it’s popularity has resulted in the barries between the aforementioned genre and its ties between r&b and pop slowly and surely merging into something completely nuanced in its own right.    This type of music has essentially no rules or motives to it; no barriers based on region or even influence at that. It’s free-forming and almost undefinable, but that is exactly what purveyors of this genre would like it to be categorized as. And with that being said, no one has been more so at the forefront of this movement in regards to the underground than the Boysnightsout (BNO) collective for the past few years.   This cast of talent, primarily based in Sweden, has utilized infused the concepts of subdued, emotionally-charged thematics into the realms of pure contemporary hip-hop to create these awe-inspiring songs that almost take the listener to a whole different world — …
