TRY – [Joey Trap]

The versatile talents of Joey Trap are on full display in his most recent 23-track release Playlist for the End of the World. Although the project is filled with several memorable moments one song, in particular, struck me to the core, “TRY.” Coming in just shy of two minutes, “TRY” highlights Joey Trap’s skill as a lyricist and his ability to cater to multiple moods with perceivable ease. From a production standpoint, the sixth track of the album is aligned with the energetic boom of the project’s overall appeal. What makes “TRY” stand out so much for me, personally, is Joey Trap’s ability to maintain complete composure while keeping pace with the high-energy of the song’s production. Without missing a beat, Joey Trap finds a pocket amidst the bass-rattling textures of the song to exercise his ability as a wordsmith. Joey Trap is the term multifaceted personified, proving his ease in tapping into high energy party anthems and lyrically dense rap marathons.  Listen to “TRY” off of Joey Trap’s Playlist for the End of the World below.

Our 50 Favorite Joey Bada$$ Songs

Every once in a blue moon, an artist will come by in hip-hop that bridges the ever-dividing gap between the new and the old – someone who embodies the best of both, and someone that everyone can agree on. Joey Bada$$ and the Pro Era crew were just that when they first came out. Employing a 90s-influenced style and a classic aesthetic that inspired a generation of artists in New York and beyond, Pro Era had the technical skill and “pure hip-hop” lyricism that one would expect from a 90s act, while they also possessed a sense for style, sound, and group comradery that resonated with current-day listeners. It was an incredible marriage of innovation and influence that came from a crew of artists talented and wise beyond their years, spearheaded by none other than Joey Bada$$: an artist now with several undeniable classics to his name, all the way from pure-as-it-gets hip-hop tracks to high-flying, radio-ready anthems. Frankly, Joey Bada$$ has done it all, and his still-growing contributions to hip-hop – aesthetically, lyrically, sonically, and otherwise – are not to be underestimated. Not often do we get a talent of Joey’s caliber that fans of any age can get behind, …

Denzel Curry: Retracing Roots

“I think about how my art is going to be reflected when I’m gone.” This is something Denzel Curry said to me during our conversation just moments before his stellar performance for 5,000 people in Boston this past Friday in support of Billie Eilish’s When We All Fall Asleep tour. Denzel has been an artist that I’ve held in high regard over the years because I’ve been able to recognize his dedication to the art, and to hear him talk about his passion for the craft was inspiring. Denzel Curry has been rapping for about eight years now, and by the young age of twenty-four, he’s already passed huge milestones in the game of rap due to his impressive work ethic and unwavering artistic integrity. Not only does he have an incredible discography under his belt, but he’s already garnered a noticeable impact on the genre of rap at such a young age, all while constantly growing, evolving, and refining his output in the process. On a widespread scale, many fans became aware of Curry after his track “Ultimate” turned into a viral internet sensation, becoming the “water-bottle-flipping” song just a few years back. Even this track though, as big …

DOPE – [CJ Fly]

Coming off the release of his highly-anticipated album “Flytrap,” Pro Era affiliate CJ Fly has just revisited the project with a wild, suggestive new visual for “DOPE.” I probably don’t have to get into too much detail about the title, as the Anthony Supreme-directed cut starts out with CJ holding several pounds of weed in a what looks like a gentleman’s club. Right after that, the video gets as provocative as a music video could get with multiple naked women dancing in the club while CJ smokes with his crew and unleashes his energy-laced verses. There’s no doubt that this was one of the hottest tracks on the album, and I thought this visual really brought the track to life with its energy and not to mention the special guest cameo from Pro Era and their leader Joey Bada$$. On that note, be sure to feast your eyes on the “DOPE” visual below and look out for the Pro Era veteran CJ Fly to have more in store for us this year. Directed by: Anthony Supreme & CJ Fly
