Get Refreshed: Lullabies, Tears, and Trends

“Get Refreshed” is a weekly column by Billy Bugara covering all things digital in the music world. Refresh yourself here.  Cover by Bernard Vernon Full Playlist (2021) Vision4k: “Lullabies, From a Ghoul” Vision4k spent 2020 in the deepest, darkest doldrums one could imagine. Anyone who experienced their long-awaited album R at the very end of that year would say the same; it was an intoxicating journey through the most ominous spaces of one’s psyche — a pure and utter bone-chilling alternative rock showcase. Not a single ray of light shone over any one of those tracks, as though Vision themself wouldn’t dare to let them in.  “Lullabies, From a Ghoul” – their first transitional release after R – could’ve laid dormant in those same doldrums like a castaway still wallowing in the pains described on that album. Instead, this EP sees Vision finally opening the blinds and letting some light in.  Don’t get it twisted, the project is still far grimmer than the average alt-rock spectacle. But the 6 tracks we have here display the sweetest take on the sinister one could ask for. Though tracks like the opening “Silver & Strained” and “Swan Song of the Buried” chug along …

Get Refreshed: The Unreal World of zootzie, The Real World of glaive, and raegun Responds With Ease

“Get Refreshed” is a weekly column by Billy Bugara covering all things digital in the music world. Refresh yourself here.  Cover by Nick D’Apolito Preface: In Memory of Lucas Foster This column is not the place for mourning, but it certainly is the place for memorializing. So much has been said about the impact of Lucas Foster – a beyond-exceptional writer who suddenly passed away this weekend – by so many others far closer to him; as a longtime admirer of his work, craft, and overall presence in the grander music blogging space, however, I feel as though I have a necessity to extend my greatest gratitude for what he was able to do during his short, yet remarkably resounding life as an equal-parts human being and master of their craft.  Be it subconsciously or direct as can be, reading the work of Lucas whenever I could inspired many of the undertakings I went through in my much more active blogging days. He was the ever-true root that others, and even he himself, grew out of as this online blogging landscape blossomed more and more over time. By extension of this notion, it would be difficult to dispute that anyone …

Get Refreshed: What T R A P S O U L Means To Dolly, dazegxd and emotionals Welcome The Scene To Jungle, and doxia’s Hit Streak Continues

“Get Refreshed” is a weekly column by Billy Bugara covering all things digital in the music world. Refresh yourself here.  Cover by Parent Company doxia: “hopeouttheroof” The level of admiration I have for someone like doxia is unreal. Every single time they come through with a solo offering, the track never fails to get lodged in my head for weeks on end. It’s honestly something about their gripping, yet soothing inflection combined with just how unorthodox their delivery is that does it for me; these two aspects make for some of the catchiest hooks and even verses alike within the digicore scene and beyond. Their greatness, even in all of its unexplainable tendencies, is just so praiseworthy for being how it is.  Their latest release “hopeouttheroof” of course follows suit, because how could it not? It’s another ridiculously catchy single that sees its repetitive hook utilized in all the best ways possible with its infectious nature. This is another example of just how comfortable the trialx12 mainstay is in their own sound, and they have certainly earned the right at this point to settle in with such a consistently effective approach given how incredibly impressive their body of work is …

Get Refreshed: The Story of Cartz

“Get Refreshed” is a weekly column by Billy Bugara covering all things digital in the music world. Refresh yourself here.  Cover by Alejo Andres Remembering To Forget With Cat Mother Any creative eager to move towards new beginnings in their artistic career might focus on the idea of the “future” more than anything else. Most creatives would more than likely share this belief in full; planning out how things might turn out in going through with an artistic transition is much better than going in blind, obviously.  But what’s even more obvious is this: Quinn – the 16-year-old phenom of the online music world – has never, and will never, be classified under the title of “most creatives.” Simply put, we’re dealing with a talent who stands completely amongst themselves in regards to their place in the modern music landscape as a whole, and nothing better exemplifies that than their brand new artistic endeavor under the pseudonym “Cat Mother.”  This fresh title has arrived with an equally-fresh outlook in regards to their craft. The immense, impactful, and influential waves that they have already created with their past pop-centric work has been effectively concealed and placed out of sight by way …

hate me – [midwxst]

As I find myself falling deeper and deeper down the wormhole that is Hyperpop, I find myself getting more and more interested in weirder sounds. While I say weird, I should clarify that I’ve been partial to interesting, innovative, and creative sounds that might come off as weird to the average listener, yet it might be normal to anyone else who has familiarized themselves with the Hyperpop scene. While midwxst has been stating his claim as to why he’s legitimately one of the best up and coming artists in the genre, he never seems to slow down and that’s part of the reason why I’ve become enthralled in the sonic landscape he has painted for himself and admirers all over the world. As I familiarize myself more and more with the subgenre as well, it appears as if there is a group of artists that stick together and collaborate more than any other genre, so this is something I admire more than anything else. Most recently, midwxst teamed up with fellow Helix Tears member/founder blackwinterwells for a track entitled “hate me”. wells handled the production on this hit, bringing a dexterous, lively beat to life with some strange yet playful …

darkkmagician – [blackwinterwells]

No one has convincingly dominated the modern music soundscape as fully and efficiently as blackwinterwells over the past year-plus. So much of the dream-esque, atmospheric, and utterly resounding sonic elements that pop music is beginning to take on more and more each day has been mastered by this magnificent talent, and it has been that way for quite some time. Where the Ontario, Canada standout has yet to fully delve into, however, is translating these ever-effective musical settings into a visual medium. It’s an endeavor that could be circumvented via the pure imagination her music sparks on its own, but one that certainly has all the potential in the world to be explored right in front of our eyes.  This task has finally been taken up via the newly-released video for her seminal single “darkkmagician.” Premiering via the titular Helix Tears channel and shot by fellow pop phenom 8485, this video serves as yet another example of the limitless creativity found within this generational act. It is a fact we can observe – and have done so accordingly – with nearly every track she’s contributed to, but with a visual element now in our hands, it becomes that much clearer …

Tracing Paths – [blackwinterwells] x [8485]

The most ideal future for pop music lies in the hands of blackwinterwells and 8485. These two artistic sensations are tried and true examples of how music has progressed up to this point in time — a time now where the quality of one’s art is judged and admired for its sincerest qualities, rather than how well it fits into the “popular lexicon” at a given moment.  Whether it is through brutal, emotional honesty, celestial sonic atmospheres, or just how downright learned and experienced the music sounds, these two have exemplified all that it means to make standout art in this day and age. The Helix Tears duo is a match made in heaven as well, simply defying the idea of chemistry and crafting collaborative offering after collaborative offering as though they were meant to make each and every song they ever did as a pair.  So it comes as no surprise whatsoever that these two would make a project together that not only stands out for its seamless pairing of these two alone, but also in marking a statement that elevates their respective statuses as future pop icons all the same. That project has indeed come in the form …

Kite: A Platinum End For Bright Beginnings

Each and every artist that makes up the current-day online music landscape is defined by nothing more than their own sense of individuality. These acts stand out so vividly amongst each other due to how they embrace their individual nature by themselves through their music and image alike, but what makes this scene so fascinating is how they do so collectively in such large numbers at the same time ever-so-constantly.  That is where an artist like 18-year-old phenom Kite comes into play. The Atlanta, Georgia native is essentially one of the most ideal reflections of what these ideas represent towards this entire scene as a whole. This magnificent talent has made an already-experienced career flourish on years end with their one-of-a-kind vocal inflection, superb pop prowess, and an all-around spotless approach to their craft that has made them one of the most defining long-lasting figures out of this burgeoning scene.  Being a member of Goonncity, Helix Tears, and Graveem1nd simultaneously, they have brought with them a dynamic outlook to their artistic presence that seems to find its place in a variety of collectives and other collaborations alike. Though their sound is absolutely untapped, they still find ways to spread it …

Aura – [Blxty]

One of the most impressive aspects that the next wave of pop music comes to flaunt in a number of its equally impressive artists is the act of turning ethereal and atmospheric stylistics into digestible, appealing offerings with their respective pop sensibilities. This fact is being showcased by acts who take that sense of atmosphere from an instrumental basis – what with its reverberated and ambient tones – and apply their vocals directly atop it while still keeping a sense of rhythm, and an infectious one at that.  Among the absolute best individuals who have come to master this unique and nuanced approach is Blxty — as the Helix Tears and NoHeart progenitor has effectively delivered track after track that sounds just as spacious as it does down to earth and comprehensive as pop songs in their own right.  For a brief, yet completely ideal peer into how exactly they come to deliver with this method, look no further than their latest release entitled “Aura.”  They present their unmatched style over a beat that suits them incredibly well; both Odel and Elias crafted a completely fitting ballad here with its controlled, yet soaring and glistening demeanor acting as a perfect …

Secrets – [Midwxst]

One of the most telling signs of prolonged superstardom as a rising act in any given music scene is when that very artist successfully comes through with a full-length project that exemplifies all that they have worked towards leading up to said project in itself. It is a true moment of self-fulfillment — one that practically any iconic artist can say they have experienced at a single point in their career.  Accomplishing that feat is certainly one thing on its own, but we’re talking about something of a different story when that very project exudes nothing else but pure passion and creative integrity as a result of all of this work put in. Not only does this sentiment work to elevate the aforementioned concept, but it also makes the sheer quality of whatever project being discussed that much greater in the process. While it is quite clear that 17-year-old pop prodigy Midwxst infuses this exact sense of passion into literally every single track he comes through with, he has successfully gone above and beyond to achieve all that these previous descriptions have to offer in such graceful fashion with his debut album Secrets.  Over the length of 9 exceptional tracks, …
